—Natasha, do you know, what is this?

-Key.

-Key. This is a key. And these?

-This is keys (внимание: Наташа делает ошибку).

-These are keys. This is a key. These are keys. Natasha, when I hold up one – it’s a key, but all together, what do I add? I add -s > keys (когда в руках один ключ — это key, но когда несколько вместе, что прибавляется? Прибавляем —s: key > keys).

—So, one key – more keys (опять ошибка, сейчас Дженнифер ее исправит).

-Many keys.

-Many, many.

-So, I can say: ten keys… one hundred keys… many keys.,, a lot of keys (a lot of = many). I have a lot of keys. When we have a key, it’s one, when we have many, we add the -s. That’s called plural (plural noun). Plural: you add the -s. Let’s take another one. What do I have in my purse? One pen – two… ? (это называется множественное число — plural).

-Pens.

-So, I have two pens. What do we add to make a plural? Pen – pens. Usually we add the -s. But… what if I have…

-One brush.

-One brush. How do you spell brush?

-B-r-u-s-h. Brush.

-Okay. What if I have two… three… four… ?

-Brushes.

-The ending now is -es. The reason is because of the “sh”. Here’s another word: bus. Bus > buses. I can say why. Because these kinds of sounds – shsh, ss, chch – those sounds mean we have to add the -es for plural. Other words – just the -s. So for example, book: -s or -es? (к слову brush мы прибавляем окончание —es, потому что оно заканчивается на шипящий согласный; так же происходит, когда слово заканчивается на другие шипящие или свистящие звуки).

-Books.

-Books. What about… do you know… dish? Dish with -s or -es?

-Dishes. Do you know match? Match > matches. Another word… Let’s talk about dollars. Is that dollar with an -s or dollar with an -es?

-Dollars. -s.

-Natasha, do you know what you say? The cell phone? You say excuse me.

-Excuse me.

-It’s okay.

-Repeat after me: keys, pens, books, brushes, buses, dishes, matches, dollars. Natasha, what about the word baby? How do you spell baby?

-B-a-b-y. Baby.

-Yes. One baby. What’s the plural? With a -y we need -es, but y changes to -i. Then we  add -es. Baby > babies. So these are plural forms. Usually we add -s: books, keys, cars. But if we have shsh, ss, chch, zz – those sounds – we add -es. With y: y changes to i and then we add -es. Okay? These are plural forms. (к слову baby тоже прибавляем —es, предварительно изменив y на i).

Упражнение

Ответьте на вопросы. Я буду задавать вопросы такого типа: Сколько… ? How many … are there? Вы должны ответить: There are – и назвать количество.

Давайте рассмотрим пример:

How many purses are there? Вы считаете: one – two – three. И даете ответ: There are three purses.

Давайте начнем. Сначала дайте ответ, потом проверьте себя.

1. How many buses are there? — There are five buses.
2. How many coins are there? — There are four coins.
3. How many babies are there? — There are two babies.
4. How many pens are there? — There are eight pens.
5. How many matches are there? — There are thirteen matches.
6. How many mirrors are there? — There are seven mirrors.
7. How many cell phones are there? — There are twelve cell phones.
